Can you go to Agafay in a rental car? What the insurance says, which vehicle to choose and how to drive on the tracks.
The Agafay desert is a stony plateau less than an hour from Marrakech. Many travellers go there in the evening for dinner in a tent. The question often comes up: can you get there in a rental car?
To book your car for this trip, see our car rental in the Palmeraie, delivered to your villa and dacia Duster rental in Marrakech pages.
The road to the camps
The first part is paved, via Tahannaout or Lalla Takerkoust. The last few kilometres are dirt or gravel tracks, in very variable condition depending on the weather.
What the insurance says
Standard protection very often excludes unpaved roads. If damage occurs on a track, you may have to pay for it. Ask the agency:
- whether your contract allows the Agafay tracks;
- which protection is suitable (some specialist agencies offer one);
- which damage is excluded (tyres, underbody).
Which vehicle to choose?
An SUV with good ground clearance makes the track much more comfortable. A 4x4 is not essential for the accessible camps, but it is reassuring and offers better traction.
Tips for driving on tracks
- Drive at 20 to 30 km/h: stones damage tyres.
- Avoid driving on the track at night if you don't know it.
- Keep your distance from vehicles in front because of the dust.
- Let the camp know your arrival time: they can send a guide to meet you.
Our Agafay desert page details the itinerary.
