Is renting a car in Marrakech a good idea?

For the city itself, no: the medina lanes are closed to cars and taxis are cheap. For everything around it, absolutely. With your own car you can be in the Ourika Valley in 75 minutes, watch the sunset over the Agafay desert, drive to Essaouira for lunch or cross the High Atlas to Aït-Ben-Haddou by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, without being tied to a tour group’s timetable.

The simplest plan for most visitors: spend your first days in the medina on foot, then have the car delivered to your riad on the morning you start exploring.

Airport pickup: how it works at Marrakech-Menara (RAK)

There is no rental desk to queue at. An agent from the agency waits in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name, walks you to the car parked nearby, checks it with you (photos of the bodywork, fuel level, mileage) and hands you the keys. Allow about fifteen minutes.

Add your flight number when you book: the agency tracks your landing and adjusts the handover if your flight is late, at no extra cost. Airport delivery is free with our partner agency, and you can drop the car back at the airport on your way home.

What it really costs

  • Economy car (Dacia Sandero, Logan): from 200 MAD a day in low season. Insurance with a standard excess and unlimited mileage are included.
  • SUV such as the Dacia Duster: from about 420 MAD a day, the comfortable choice for the Atlas.
  • Automatic city car (Peugeot 208): from about 340 MAD a day. Automatics are rarer in Morocco, so book early.
  • Fuel: about 90 MAD of diesel for a Marrakech–Essaouira return trip in a Logan. Motorway tolls are paid in cash or by card.
  • Prices go up during Easter, July–August and Christmas. Rentals of 7 days or more get an automatic discount, up to 15% from 28 days.

Deposit, excess and insurance in plain English

Every rental includes third-party liability insurance and 24/7 roadside assistance, with a standard excess (the amount you pay if the car is damaged). You can reduce it with the Comfort cover, or bring it down to zero with the Serenity cover, which also lowers the deposit to the minimum.

The deposit is not a payment: it is held during the rental and returned when you bring the car back. Depending on the agency, it is taken on a credit card or paid in cash in dirhams, which is handy if you only travel with a debit card. The amount and method are shown on every offer before you book.

Your licence and documents

  • A driving licence held for at least two years. UK, US, Canadian, Australian, EU and Scandinavian licences are accepted as they are written in Latin characters; an International Driving Permit is only needed if yours is not.
  • Your passport.
  • Your Locavi booking confirmation, on your phone is fine.
  • Minimum age 21 for economy and city cars, sometimes 25 for larger categories.

Driving in and around Marrakech

  • Morocco drives on the right. Roundabouts are busy: give way to traffic already on the roundabout and watch for scooters on both sides.
  • Speed limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on main roads, 60 km/h in town. Police speed checks are frequent.
  • Park in guarded car parks near the medina (Koutoubia, Bab Doukkala); street attendants in yellow vests expect a few dirhams.
  • Fill up before crossing the Atlas: petrol stations are fewer after the Tizi n’Tichka pass.
  • Avoid driving mountain roads at night if you are not used to them.

Five drives to plan from Marrakech

  • Ourika Valley: 65 km, about 1 h 15, waterfalls at Setti Fatma.
  • Agafay desert: 40 km, about 45 minutes, sunset and dinner in a desert camp.
  • Essaouira: 175 km, about 2 h 45 through argan forests to the Atlantic.
  • Ouzoud Falls: 150 km, about 2 h 45, Morocco’s highest waterfalls.
  • Ouarzazate and Aït-Ben-Haddou: 200 km over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, best as an overnight trip.

Fuel, tolls and speed cameras

  • Fuel: stations are everywhere in towns and along motorways, but further apart in the Atlas and the south, so fill up when the tank drops below half. Most rental cars here are diesel (Logan, Duster), the cheapest to run.
  • Tolls: the motorways to Casablanca and Agadir are tolled, payable in cash or by card at the booth; the Atlas roads and the N8 to Essaouira are free.
  • Speed cameras and police checks are frequent at town entrances: slow down at the town sign and keep your licence, passport and rental papers to hand.
  • Rules: seat belts front and back, no handheld phone, zero tolerance for alcohol.
