Self-drive or with a driver: the difference
- Self-drive: you only pay for the rental, from 200 MAD a day, and leave whenever you like.
- With a driver: expect about 600 MAD more per 8-hour day, on top of the rental.
- Self-drive, you are responsible for the car: choose cover that suits your trip.
- With a driver, no parking to find and no night driving: handy for a wedding or an evening in town.
Requirements to drive yourself
- Minimum age 21 (25 for a 4x4 or premium car).
- A valid driving licence held for at least two years.
- A passport or ID card.
- A deposit, by card or in cash depending on the agency, shown on each car.
Where to drive from Marrakech
- Ourika Valley: 1 h 15, Setti Fatma waterfalls.
- Agafay desert: 45 minutes, camps and sunsets.
- Essaouira: 2 h 45 on the N8, the Atlantic coast.
- Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou: 4 hours over the Tizi n’Tichka pass.
- Ouzoud waterfalls: 2 h 30, an easy day trip.
Driving in Marrakech without stress
In town, keep your distance from scooters and use guarded car parks near the medina. On the road, respect speed limits: 60 km/h in towns, 100 km/h on main roads and 120 km/h on motorways, with frequent speed cameras. An automatic makes traffic jams much easier.
