Do you really need a 4x4?
A 4x4 is useful if you leave the tarmac: Agafay desert tracks, remote kasbahs and valleys, long stages towards M’Hamid. For the paved Atlas roads (Tizi n’Tichka, Ourika, Ouzoud), an SUV is almost always enough.
The road to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes is paved all the way: a 4x4 only matters if you plan to drive on the tracks around the dunes.

Insurance and tracks
Standard cover often excludes off-road driving. Specialist agencies offer protection suited to tracks: ask for it before you book. The driver must be at least 25 years old.
4x4 car rental in Marrakech: prices and off-road cover
The cheapest 4x4 to hire in Marrakech is the Suzuki Jimny, from about 650 MAD a day; a Toyota Hilux is around 900 MAD and a Land Cruiser Prado around 1,200 MAD outside peak season. For off-road car rental, check that the contract allows tracks: specialist agencies offer 4WD cover for that. On a budget and on paved roads, a Dacia Duster from about 420 MAD is enough.
Where to go in a 4x4 or SUV from Marrakech
Four trips work very well in a 4x4 or SUV from Marrakech: the Ourika Valley, Imlil and Toubkal, the Agafay desert and the Tizi n’Tichka road to Ouarzazate. Most roads are paved: a high, comfortable car is enough, but tracks call for a real 4x4 and suitable insurance. Ask the agency whether tracks are allowed under the contract before leaving the tarmac.
