If you are staying in town
The medina is explored on foot, and the small beige taxis easily link Gueliz, Hivernage and the sights. Renting a car is pointless if you don't leave the city: you would mainly be paying for parking.
If you want to get out of Marrakech
As soon as you visit Ourika, Essaouira, Ouzoud or Agafay, a car gives you freedom over timing and stops.

The right compromise
Many travellers combine the two: taxis or transfers during the days in the medina, then a rental for the excursions. You can ask for delivery to the medina gate on the day you set off.
What about a private driver?
If you don't want to drive but want freedom over timing, a rental with a driver is a very good compromise, especially for groups.
