The Tizi n'Tichka and Oukaimeden can be covered in snow from December to March. How to prepare with a rental car.
Winter in Marrakech is mild during the day, but the High Atlas is covered in snow. If you are planning to drive on mountain roads, a few precautions are essential.
To book your car for this trip, see our dacia Duster rental in Marrakech and car rental in Agdal, Marrakech pages.
The roads concerned
- The Tizi n'Tichka pass (N9) towards Ouarzazate.
- The road to Oukaimeden, the ski resort.
- The roads to Imlil and Asni after heavy snowfall.
Before you leave
- Check the weather forecast and the state of the road (traffic information, rental agency, locals).
- Fill up and bring water, a blanket and a charged phone.
- Ask the agency whether the vehicle has good tyres; snow chains may be needed.
While driving
- Drive slowly and increase your safety distances.
- Avoid braking suddenly on black ice.
- Turn back if conditions get worse.
Which vehicle?
An SUV or a 4x4 offers more safety on snow. A city car is still possible on cleared roads, but be careful.
Have a plan B
If the Tichka is closed, stay in Marrakech or head for the coast (Essaouira, Agadir), where the weather stays mild.
