The Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) is easy to cross by car, as long as you prepare: departure time, weather, lorries, fuel.
The Tizi n'Tichka is the busiest road pass in the High Atlas, peaking at about 2,260 metres. It links Marrakech to Ouarzazate in about four hours, via the N9 national road.

When to leave?
Set off early in the morning, before 9 am: you will meet fewer lorries and have the best visibility. Late in the day, fog is common at the summit.
The state of the road
The road is paved and wide, but winding. Many lorries drive slowly: only overtake when visibility allows, and wait for the straight sections.
In winter
Snow and ice are possible from December to March. Check before you leave and choose an SUV with good tyres. If the weather is bad, postpone your departure.
Fuel and breaks
Fill up in Aït Ourir or at the first stations on the southern side. Bring water and a snack: stops are rarer after the pass.
What to see on the way?
- The viewpoints at the top of the pass.
- The Telouet kasbah, a short detour away.
- Aït Ben Haddou, 30 minutes from Ouarzazate.
Our Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou page details the itinerary hour by hour.
