175 km, about 2 h 45: the distance between Marrakech and Essaouira, the road to take (no motorway all the way), the stops, parking and the budget.

Essaouira is the most popular excursion from Marrakech: the white and blue town, its fishing port and its ramparts facing the Atlantic are less than three hours' drive away. Here is everything you need to know to make the journey in a rental car: distance, road, stops, parking and budget.

Is there a Marrakech–Essaouira motorway?

No, not all the way. The A7 motorway links Marrakech to Agadir; you can take it as far as the Chichaoua exit, then join the N8 to Essaouira. The time saved is small, as most of the journey is on the national road anyway. The N8 is a good two-lane road, straight and well maintained, with a few villages where you need to slow down.

The road, step by step

  1. Leave Marrakech to the west, towards Chichaoua. Fill up before you go: stations are further apart after that.
  2. The Haouz plain: long straight lines, olive groves, villages. Watch out for speed checks at the entrance to built-up areas.
  3. Chichaoua: a good place for a coffee break, halfway.
  4. The argan forests: after Sidi Mokhtar, the landscape changes. This is where you may see the famous goats perched in the trees.
  5. Arriving in Essaouira: the road drops towards the ocean, the air gets cooler and the wind picks up.

The stops worth the detour

  • An argan cooperative run by women, to see how the oil is made and buy local products.
  • A roadside café in Chichaoua, to break up the journey.
  • The viewpoint before the descent to Essaouira, with the town and the ocean in the distance.
  • On the way back, if you have time: Sidi Kaouki, a surfers' beach 25 km south of Essaouira.

Parking in Essaouira

The Essaouira medina is pedestrianised. Park in the large car park near the port or close to Bab Doukkala, then walk. As in Marrakech, an attendant watches the cars for a few dirhams. Leave nothing visible inside the car.

How long to stay?

  • One day: leave at 8 am, arrive around 11 am, grilled fish lunch at the port, a stroll along the Skala and through the souks, head back around 4.30 pm to arrive before dark.
  • Two days: sunset on the ramparts, dinner in the medina, a morning in Sidi Kaouki or Moulay Bouzerktoune, back in the afternoon.
  • Three days or more: continue to Agadir and return by motorway: that is our Marrakech – Essaouira – Agadir loop.

The budget for the return trip

Which car to choose?

The road is paved and easy: a diesel Dacia Logan, very economical, or a city car is more than enough. With unlimited mileage, you can do the return trip without counting. As a family with luggage, prefer a Dacia Duster.

Our driving tips

  • Avoid driving at night if you don't know the road: villages and two-wheelers without lights call for attention.
  • Respect the limits: 100 km/h on the road, 60 km/h in built-up areas. Checks are frequent on the N8.
  • Keep some change for parking attendants and small purchases on the way.
