Rental car inspection: the checklist to follow

30 March 2026 · 2 min read ·

Photos, fuel, spare wheel, documents: the precise list of what to check when you collect and return your car.

The inspection protects the customer as much as the agency. Take ten minutes to do it properly, ideally in daylight. You can also tick off our interactive checklist.

To book your car for this trip, see our car rental at Marrakech-Menara airport (RAK) and citroën C3 rental in Marrakech pages.

When collecting the keys

  1. Photograph every side, the roof, the wheels, the windows and the odometer.
  2. Note any scratch or chip on the form, however small.
  3. Check the fuel level, and that the document states it.
  4. Check the spare wheel, the jack and the warning triangle.
  5. Test the air conditioning, the headlights, the indicators and the wipers.
  6. Keep the insurance certificate and the registration document in the car.

During the rental

  • Keep the agency's and the assistance service's contact details to hand.
  • Leave nothing visible in the vehicle.
  • Report any incident to the agency immediately.

On return

  1. Fill up to the same level as at pick-up.
  2. Empty the car and check the door pockets.
  3. Do the inspection with the agent and ask for a document confirming there is no damage.
  4. Check that the deposit is released: this generally happens the same day or within a few days.
