Renting a car in Tangier: airport, Cape Spartel, Asilah and Chefchaouen

20 October 2026 · 2 min read ·

Tangier airport, Tanger Med port, Cape Spartel, Hercules Caves, Asilah and Chefchaouen: how to organise your car rental in northern Morocco.

Tangier, on the Strait of Gibraltar, is the gateway to northern Morocco. Here is how to organise a car rental for the city and its surroundings.

To book your car for this trip, see our cheap car rental in Marrakech and car rental at Marrakech train station pages.

Tangier by car

The centre and the medina are visited on foot; park the car in a guarded car park or at the hotel. The car really comes into its own for the coast and the Rif: Cape Spartel, the Hercules Caves, Asilah, Tetouan and Chefchaouen.

Arriving: airport and port

Tangier-Ibn Battouta airport (TNG) is about fifteen kilometres from the centre. The port of Tanger Med also welcomes travellers arriving from Europe with their own car: see coming to Morocco by car or renting on arrival.

What to do around Tangier by car

  • Cape Spartel and the Hercules Caves: a few kilometres away, on the Atlantic.
  • Asilah: a small fortified town with painted walls, about 45 km away.
  • Tetouan (about 60 km) and the beaches of Martil and M'diq.
  • Chefchaouen (about 115 km, 2 hours): the blue city, see our page Chefchaouen.

Driving in the north

The motorways to Rabat and Casablanca are modern and tolled. The Rif roads are winding: drive in daylight and avoid night driving. See driving in Morocco: rules and tolls.

A Tangier – Chefchaouen – Fes loop

A classic loop links Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fes and Rabat. Allow at least four days to enjoy it. For the southern part, see Marrakech → Fes.

Before renting

Check the deposit, the excess and the fuel, and do the inspection with photos: our checklist guides you. See the page car rental for Tangier to be notified when Locavi opens.
